Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, July 23rd, 2011 -
It was a shock that sent waves through the badminton world last week when German Wildman Mark Zwiebler pulled the upset of his career against Olympic Gold Medalist Taufik Hidayat at the US Open.
After today’s destruction of Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai 21-15, 21-8, Zwiebler is looking to be in top form for the match tomorrow. However, Taufik has also looked impressive as he comfortably disposed of Hong Kong’s Wink Ki Wong 19-21, 21-12, 21-17 showing a brilliant display of talent and skills.
“It was one of the finest displays of badminton Vancouver has ever seen,” said Chairman of the organizing Committee Bobby Milroy. “The Crowd was louder than I have heard it in some of the biggest tournaments in the world. Taufik is quite the showman.”
Korean captain Lee Yong Dae then took the court to whip the crowd into a frenzy by stealing the first set against Thailand’s Bodin Issara and Maneepong Jongjit after being down 5-11. The second set proved to be another great show for the crowd as the Korean Olympic Gold Medalist took the speed of play one level higher and closed the match 21-19, 21-12.
The Finals will start at noon on July 24th starting with Mixed Doubles and followed by the Mens Singles. The Finals be taped and aired by Shaw TV.
